Dry westerly to west-northwesterly winds have ushered in a cooler and cleaner air mass that has dropped gaseous and particle pollution AQI to the middle Code GREEN range this afternoon. Dry high pressure will continue to reside over the Triad through the weekend as an upper level low remains situated north of the Carolinas. However, cloud cover will gradually increase through Sunday as the upper low slowly moves offshore and unsettled weather begins to move in from the west. Precipitation should remain well south and west of the Triad, but cloud cover will likely limit ozone production while also trapping pollution particles closer to the surface. With that said, ozone levels are expected to trend downward, but particle pollution AQI will trend upward, with both pollutants still remaining Code GREEN. A cold air wedge has potential to develop as early as Monday, setting up an inversion layer that should trap particle pollution AQI underneath the cloud deck. Precipitation amounts are expected to remain light, which should prevent a vertical squeezing of particle pollution in the lower portion of the atmosphere and keep air quality in the upper Code GREEN range for Memorial Day.
